Having had only one prenatal visit, a 16-year-old primigravida at 37 weeks' gestation is admitted to the hospital in active labor. her cervix is 7 cm dilated with the presenting part at +1 station. soon after admission, the nurse observes that the client is hyperventilating. which action would be most appropriate?

hyperventilating is indicative of low carbon dioxide, from what I've learned, a patient should breath into a brown paper bag or similar, to avoid this symptom. with med.technology, there r other methods also..

Answer:

Hyperventilation refers to breathing, which is faster and deeper in comparison to the normal. It makes the concentration of carbon dioxide in the blood decline. Some of the reasons for sudden hyperventilation comprise asthma, anxiety, a head injury, emphysema, fever, and some medications.  

In the mentioned case, the most appropriate nursing action would be to provide the patient with a paper bag and make her breathe in it. The procedure of breathing using a paper bag is to take six to twelve easy, casual breaths, with a small paper bag held over the nose and the mouth. After that there is a need to withdraw the bag from the mouth and nose and to take easy and casual breaths.
