The short answer is that they view quilts different because they see their heritage differently.

For Maggie the heritage is something living, something that is alive in every item made by the members of her family, living or deceased. She uses items that her ancestors made in her everyday life. The quilts symbolize that connection with her heritage.

Dee on the other hand sees heritage not as something living but as something to be kept safe and preserver. She is not connected to heritage and for her the quilts are something to be shown off, hanged on the wall. The quilts are not something to be handled as she sees it.
