John Locke is associated with the "Social Contract" political theory of government, since in this he calls for people to give up certain individual freedoms to the state in order to be protected.
The role of government according to John Locke is best explained by the statement that a Government exists to promote public good, and to protect the life, liberty, and property of the people that it governs.
