Ways in which an author develops a character are with physical description, behavior, insight into the character's thought processes through dialogue or narration, and insight through the opinions of other characters in a story

The three ways that a novelist can portray a character are through physical description, actions and behavior and inner thoughts.

How characters are portrayed in the novel?

The characters are represented in the work of fiction through both narrative and dialogue. They can be flat or small, round and large, and develop deeper. Personas are revealed through the character's reaction, dialogue, and explanation to the conflict. It is difficult to make a fictional character look like a real living breathing person. In addition to physically portraying a character, in order to make it truly three-dimensional, it is necessary to portray the character's motivation, goals, personality, and flaws.

When the author explicitly describes a character to the reader through a narrator or through the eyes of another character, this is called direct characterization. This type of narration provides accurate information about what the character looks like or how the character sees the world. The second type is called indirect characterization because it is implicit (display rather than say). We understand their personality through actions, reactions and dialogues.
