The section of the lithosphere that carries the crust is the upper mantle. The crust is the uppermost layer. In the ocean the crust consists of denser material and is only about 5 km thick, but continental crust is thicker and can be up to 65 km thick. The crust together with the upper mantle make up the lithosphere and they can extend up to 80 km deep and rests on top of the asthenosphere which is ductile and fluid, and carries the lithosphere on its back.
