4th question - What battle stopped Union progress westward and save Shreveport from falling?

Respuesta :

1. The correct answer here would be Shreveport.
The Union forces have successfully taken New Orleans and thus continued their advance up the Mississippi River and they managed to capture the state capital of Baton Rouge . The capital of the state was then relocated to Opelousas and finally it was relocated one last time to Shreveport which did not fall.

2.General Benjamin Butler was in charge of the city of New Orleans after it was taken over by the Union forces. During his eight months as the supervisor of the city he earned the nickname the Beast due to his treatment of the residents. His reputation was horrible and they say he robbed the residents, he executed William Mumford and they also said that any women that offended the soldiers could be held liable as the prostitute, so he naturally he was hated by the South.

3. New Orleans was one of the most strategic points for the South during the Civil War and it served as a staging ground for the deployment of their troops. So it was heavily fortified. The Confederacy created numerous rings of defensive blockades that were designed to hinder the Union ships as much as possible. The Union's plan was to sail into the city by using the rivers. In the end they were successful.

4. That would be mostly the Battle of Mansfield but we can also add its extension the Battle of Pleasant Hill, but the most important one is definitively Mansfield. This marked the end of the Red River Campaign, which for its goal had the capture of the town of Shreveport.
