One of the elements that helped to separate the Freedom Summer from other voter registration drive was the people who worked on this campaign. This campaign, aimed at increasing African-American voter registration in the state of Mississippi, resulted in thousands of volunteers helping. These volunteers included white citizens who were from out-of state. This ability to bring individuals from around the country to help with this voter registration project is a unique feature that few other registration drives had in this point in history.
