The government of colonies was considered to be the extension of the English government, the courts also implemented the common law of England. The name of the legislative body varied from one colony to another and was elected body.

The diplomatic affairs and trade policies were handles by  London. The major difference between the colonies and the mother country was that there was a representative government in the colonies while in Britain it was a monarchy.
