The Acequia system originally began in the Roman empire. Roman engineers brought the acequia canals to the Iberian peninsula, which is where Spain and Portugal are. Arabs who lived there adopted the system as well as Spaniards and Portuguese people who later spread the technology through their colonies with the Acequias in the United States being around 400 years old.
