When antlions are larvae, they usually experience intense competition amongst themselves because:

  • they are so many
  • there is a scarcity of food
  • there are few spaces in the sand for all of them to burrow into

As a result, there is intense competition between the larvae and the larger one usually won. Some larvae even close off the holes of other larvae by throwing sand into them and cannibalism is a regular occurrence as well.
