Morality plays together with the mystery play and the miracle play, are part of what is called vernacular drama which was produced in Europe during the Middle Ages, specially in the 15th and 16th centuries. It is characterized by the personification of characters as abstract qualities or concepts such as virtue, death or vice. They are used to show moral lessons and are centered on a hero that has weaknesses. These weaknesses are assaulted by demonic forces, the hero has to choose redemption and the aid of the forces of good such as justice, virtue, truth.
