Many of the Native American cultures that lived in modern-day Guatemala faced problems. One of the largest of the cultures was the Maya, and they faced a large problem with importing and exporting goods such as food and other important items necessary to survival. The solution surrounding this is simple. The Maya and other cultures had been fairly self-sufficient for so long before the settlers arrived, so they remained self-sufficient.
