"Mother Tongue" by Amy Tan is a reflective essay. In a reflective essay, the author examines his or her life experiences and how they have changed or grown from those experiences. In "Mother Tongue," Amy is reflecting on her experiences with different types of English, the English of her mother and the scholarly English she learned from books. She reflected on the limitations that existed for her mother due to her broken English, but also on the passion and imagery behind it. The experiences mentioned in her essay led her to write fiction with her mother's English in mind.

Toward the start of the piece we are told about the various sorts of English she would talk with her mom and with every other person; we are then told how English wasn't Amy's most grounded subject and later on we are told about the challenges her mom experienced on account of the manner in which she communicated in English and the prejudice she confronted.
