It was a depression. The reconstruction of the United States was a harrowing time for both the North and the South. Black codes were installed, and African Americans were to be earning their freedom. Thanks to the Reconstruction Era, the South was introduced it's first state - funded public schools system, more equitable taxation legislations, laws against racial discrimination in public areas, and profound economic development programs. Aid to railroads and other enterprises made the new America begin to change.
