The Great Plains is the name assigned to the area of the United States that goes through the states of Kansas, North and South Dakota, Nebraska, and parts of Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico Texas, Wyoming and Oklahoma. The main activity done in the region is cattle ranching and dry farming. During the Great Depression, in 1930, the Great Plaines not only suffered, as every area of the country because of the economic crisis, but also because of a severe drought. With both conditions affecting severely the area, the farm families found themselves with no way of making a living, and a massive amount of them abandoned their homes. By the year 1940, 2.5 million people had left the area and abandoned their homes.
