(y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1)
^^^ Essentially says, subtract the y from y, the x from x. Y is over x. You just have to subtract them in the same order from x in the y. So you can't do 4 - -1 and then 2 - - 3.

4 - - 1 = 5 because subtracting a negative is adding a positive.
-3 - 2 = -5

So your answer is -1. Because. 5/-5.. it's.. it's -1.
the slope of the line that passes through the points (x₁,y₁) and (x₂,y₂) is
[tex] \frac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1} [/tex]
given
(-3,4) and (2,-1)
(x,y)
x₁=-3
y₁=
4x₂=
y2₂=-1

subsitute
[tex] \frac{-1-4}{2-(-3)} [/tex]
[tex] \frac{-5}{2+3} [/tex]
[tex] \frac{-5}{5} [/tex]
-1
the slope is -1
