The Appalachian Mountains are located to the Northeastern part of the United States which means that most of the thirteen original colonies had the mountains running through them.

The Native Americans tended to be divided into groups based on geography which meant that the Appalachian Mountains were located in the Northeast Native American Cultural region.

Another physical feature that people in the Northeast Native American Cultural region would have been conversant with were the Great Lakes. This is perhaps why fishing was one of their major economic activities.

As for the Native Americans in the Great Plains area, they would have been separated from the Natives in the West by the Rocky Mountain range. Their economic activities would have been related to farming.
