The Taj Mahal demonstrates the strong Persian influence that was felt on the architecture mostly through the large centrally located iwan that is located on the face of the structure. An Iwan, sometimes referred to as an ivan in other languages, is a large hallway or room that is rectangular in shape. It is often vaulted and has walls on three of its sides with one side that is completely open.
