Malcolm X describes in his essay how becoming literate helped him see the oppression around him and in the world.
Due to their history of oppression and exclusion from official education, black people have had to discover creative ways to further their education. As they expand their horizons and embrace new ideas, they come face to face with a terrible reality that oppresses them and unfairly denies them their rights. Both Frederick Douglass and Malcolm X share their experiences of breaking into the world of reading in these pieces, "Learning How to Read and Write" by Frederick Douglass and "Learning to Read" by Malcolm X. They are aware of all the injustices in their environment because they left ignorance behind. I believe that one of the most crucial tools that people have for understanding global concerns is literacy. Understanding global issues enables people to make decisions about how to respond to various circumstances and prevents them from being misled by those who just seek to gain power at the expense of others.
